Beschreibung

β-Glukan is a fraction of yeast rich in mannan-oligosaccharides (MOS) and beta-glucans (1,3 and 1,6). It is produced by the hydrolysis of yeast derived from Saccharomyces cerevisiae culture.

Effects of beta-glucans on microbes and viruses:

  1. In the submucosal layer of the intestine, beta-glucans activate macrophages, NK cells (natural killers), and LAK cells (lymphokine-activated killers).
  2. This creates a strong antibacterial defense barrier in the mucous membrane of the intestine.
  3. Activated macrophages initiate the production of lymphocytes responsible for protecting the endothelium. This leads to a significant increase in local immunity due to enhanced phagocytic activity.
  4. Furthermore, the activation of phagocytosis triggers the synthesis and release of cytokines (interleukins and interferons). This further strengthens the intestine’s defense against viral pathogens.
  5. The release of cytokines signals the activation of other cells in the immune system, primarily T and B lymphocytes.

How do MOS (mannan-oligosaccharides) work?

  1. MOS contains active mannose residues, similar to those found on the surface layer of the intestine.
  2. Due to their similarity, yeast mannans can prevent the binding of pathogens and carbohydrate surface components of the intestinal wall.
  3. The binding between MOS and pathogens is strong and lasting, effectively isolating pathogens.
  4. The intestinal motility helps quickly remove both pathogens and MOS from the digestive tract through defecation. As a result, pathogens are unable to adhere to the intestinal wall, inhibiting their reproduction and promoting their rapid expulsion from the digestive tract.
